Extra GO train trips added to Kitchener Line for World Series games

It’s another example of why more GO Trains on the Kitchener line is nothing but a good thing.

Metrolinx announced on Friday that it would be deferring planned work on the Lakeshore West tracks to allow for an extra trip from Union Station to the Kitchener Station after Friday’s and Saturday’s World Series Games.

That means fans from Waterloo Region who are going to the games or heading downtown to watch at a Toronto establishment will be able to get home.

The new trip will leave Union Station at 12:35 a.m., stopping at all stations along the line, arriving in Kitchener around 2:27 a.m.

Earlier this month, the province announced an agreement with CN Rail to purchase land that will be used to bring all-way, two-way GO Train service to Waterloo Region.

While the City of Toronto and its businesses are set to economically benefit from the Blue Jays’ appearance in the World Series, organizers of next year’s Ontario Summer Games are watching to see if they can pick up any tricks that could ensure the games run as smoothly as possible.

Waterloo Region was named host for the 2026 games back in April.

Allister Scorgie, Director of Sport Hosting, Explore Waterloo Region, was a guest on The Mike Farwell Show and spoke about the effect the games will have.

“Really, the economic benefits come from the visitors. With 4,000-plus participants and their families and friends, we see a lot of business for local hotels, and that also keeps restaurants and retail and local attractions busy when we have that many people in the community.”

The region estimates the economic impact of the game will be around $6 million.

The 2026 Ontario Summer Games will run from July 30 to Aug. 2, 2026.
