By Justin Koehler

Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) are investigating two incidences of suspicious jewelry swap attempts in Kitchener that they believe are connected.

The first took place on Friday, Oct. 17 around 2:30 p.m. in the area of Oprington and Benesfort drives.

Officers say the victim was approached by a vehicle carrying three people. The occupants then exited the vehicle and allegedly attempted to place jewelry on the individual.

The victim declined, and the three suspects leaving the scene before police arrived. No one was hurt during the incident.

Less than an hour later, at 3:20 p.m., a similar situation was reported near Margaret and Fairfield avenues.

In that case, the victim was approached by a vehicle occupied by two people. The suspects got out and worked to place jewelry on the victim, while simultaneously allegedly working to remove jewelry the victim was already wearing.

Those individuals fled the scene before police arrived, and again, no injuries were reported.

Investigators are now working to identify the suspects involved in the incident, with photos of the vehicles used during the two occurrences now released. Officers have said they believe the two incidents are connected.

They’re asking anyone with information on the suspects or the jewelry swaps to reach out to WRPS at 519-570-9777, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
