Jim Schonewille loves the Toronto Blue Jays so much that every corner of his home is covered in the team’s merchandise or logo.
The self-described “super fan” from Kitchener is on cloud 9 after the Jays tied the series 2-2 against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night. With another game on Friday in Seattle before the boys of summer are back home, Schonewille, like many fans, is ecstatic.
“I have said that the Blue Jays would go into Seattle and sweep them and come back to Toronto and take one more and get back into the World Series,” he told The Mike Farwell Show on Friday. “Like every other Jays fan out there, (I’ve) had my fingers crossed and I think that that’s what’s going to happen.”
His love for the team started because of his grandfather when he was a teenager. Schonewille was pictured in a local paper in 1992 for decorating his house for the first time ‘Canada’s team’ was in the World Series, and “it’s carried on.”
“My collection has just gotten bigger and bigger as you can see it through the pictures,” he said.
Celebrating the ’92 and ’93 wins, Schonewille said this year’s team is the best because they have gelled.
“It’s been a very fun team to watch right from spring training. Every member of this team has contributed one through nine,” he said.
He’s enjoyed watching players from the minors grow into their own, or how Daulton Varsho runs out of the box every single time. But one moment of history came during Thursday’s game when pitcher Max Scherzer told off the team’s manager.
“‘Mad Max’ yelling at (John) Schneider last night when he went to the mound,” he said. “Even when they’re down…They always are fighting back.”
Schonewille’s fandom is set to continue as he is constantly collecting more items to add. In some instances, like the Blue Jays curtains, he’s made them himself.
His wife and daughter sometimes ask him to put away some of the items (like the couch cover) at the end of a season, but if the Jays are on, the cover is out, Schonewille said.
“I enjoy it and this is my one hobby,” he said. “It’s a magical game to watch.”
