Arrest made after robbery suspect barricades himself in residence

There was a heavy police presence in a Kitchener neighbourhood that resulted in one man in custody.

On October 12, Waterloo regional police responded to the area of Charles Street East and Cedar Street South around 9:50 a.m. after receiving reports of a robbery.

Officers say the suspect broke into a residence, allegedly assaulted the victim and stole personal property.

When officers got to the area, the suspect barricaded themselves in a nearby residence. Police sent out a warning on their social media page just before 12 p.m.

Two hours later, police confirmed that the suspect had been taken into custody after negotiating with the Emergency Response Team. He was also taken to a local hospital for further assessment.

No physical injuries were reported from the incident.

A 37-year-old man from Kitchener now faces several charges, including robbery with violence, unlawfully in dwelling house, mischief interfere with lawful use of property and assault peace officer.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and the investigation is ongoing.
