Fake Canadian currency used in buy-sell deals in Cambridge

Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) are investigating several cases where counterfeit Canadian currency was exchanged during online buy-and-sell transactions in Cambridge.

Police didn’t specify the number of incidents, but say in each case, the victims were selling electronics through an online marketplace and upon meeting to make the exchange, the victims were paid in counterfeit cash. The incidents all occurred in March.

It’s not until well after the transaction that it’s discovered the bills are bogus.

Information on the fraud incidents should be directed to WRPS or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.waterloocrimestoppers.com.

Police urge anyone buying or selling online to take precautions to protect themselves and their property. A designated, well-lit area is available for just this purpose at the WRPS stations on Columbia St. in Waterloo, Hespeler Rd. in Cambridge and the headquarters at 200 Maple Grove Rd. Cambridge.
