Kitchener man charged after online marketplace fraud

A Kitchener man is facing several charges after an attempted scam during an online marketplace sale.

On Oct. 2, regional police responded to the area of King Street North in Waterloo after receiving a report of fraud involving counterfeit money.

Through the investigation, officers concluded the victim met the suspect at a location to sell a phone that was for sale on a buy-and-sell site.

The suspect bought the device using cash, and when the victim went to the bank to deposit the money, the bills were deemed to be fake.

A 23-year-old Kitchener man was arrested and charged with uttering counterfeit money, false pretense, and possession of property obtained by crime.

The investigation is ongoing.
