It wasn’t the start to 2026 the Rangers wanted, as Kitchener dropped its new year opener to the Barrie Colts in a 3-2 shootout loss.
Haeden Ellis got the Rangers on the board at 6:32 in the first period, but the lead did not last long. Carter Lowe tied it up for Barrie six minutes later at 12:07. Both teams were tied at one a piece at the end of the opening period.
Barrie took advantage of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty from Jacob Xu halfway through the second, with Brad Gardiner scoring on the power play, giving the Colts a 2-1 lead.
Kitchener was not done there as they pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, allowing Christian Humphreys to score with 44 seconds left in the third period to force overtime.

No one was able to finish off the game in the extra period, forcing overtime. Barrie would outlast the Rangers, taking the shootout win in the sixth round with another goal by Carter Lowe.
Despite the shootout loss, Kitchener has gained a point in the last eight of their 10 games, spanning back to Dec. 7, 2025. They current stand at the top of the Midwest Division with a record of 23-11-3-1 and 50 points.
Kitchener will have a week off to rest before they welcome the Oshawa Generals to the Aud on Jan. 9.
