Rangers get back in win column, hand Attack first loss of the season

After losing their first game of the season to the Owen Sound Attack just one week ago, the Kitchener Rangers returned the favour Friday.

Luca Romano opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game at 4:29 to give the Rangers the early lead. Owen Sound tied it up with a goal from Pierce Mbuyi at 13:58. The tie would not last long, as Christian Humphreys and Cameron Arquette each added a tally of their own to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead heading into the second.

Humphreys scored his second of the night on the power play during the second period to give the Rangers a commanding 4-1 lead.

The Attack weren’t done there, as two power play goals from Mbuyi and Jacob Therrien brought the game closer. But it was not enough, as the Rangers held on to get the 4-3 win.

After the game, head coach Jussi Ahokas said the team played its best 5-on-5 game of the year.

“We played how we want to play,” he said. “We still took too many penalties and we have to be smarter than that. All in all, we played a way better game.”

Christian Humphreys received first star honours for his two goal performance, with Cameron Arquette receiving the third star.

The Rangers will have the weekend off before heading out on the first road trip of the season. They will be in Flint, Mich. on Wednesday to take on the Firebirds, before heading to Sault St. Marie on Friday.

Puck drop on Wednesday is at 7 p.m.
