Drivers who frequent Highway 124 between Guelph and Waterloo Region can expect to see two new roundabouts in the near future.
It’s a major change to one of the busier highways throughout the area, with regular delays seen on Highway 124 during the early morning and afternoon commutes. People should expect the traffic installations to be complete by 2027.
While the new additions are still a far way from being completed, work has already been underway and even completed in advance of the new roundabouts.
Construction for Phase 1 of the plan has finished, which impacted the drive from the edge of Guelph through to Whitelaw Road.
“Detailed design and scheduling is currently underway for the second stage of construction for WR 124 between Whitelaw Road and Township Sideroad 1,” said County Engineer for the County of Wellington, Don Kudo. “The preliminary schedule for the second construction stage is to do utility relocations in 2026 and possibly start the construction of the project in late 2026.”
Kudo specified that the roundabouts will be installed at the two intersections where Highway 124 meets Wellington Road 32.
He went on to specify that those construction efforts are expected to carry over and be completed in 2027.
It all comes as the county expects the highway to hit its allotted driver capacity before the year 2041; it was part of a review looking into future transportation network requirements to accommodate future population and employment growth.
