WCDSB livestreams first meeting of new school year since 2023 recording restriction

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) marked the new school year with some big changes for board trustees.

The changes were literally visible, with board meetings now officially livestreamed this year. It was a change made in the spring, amid calls for more transparency at the board.

Restrictions on video and audio recordings at the local Catholic board meetings had been in place for two years, starting in 2023, after trustees and staff said they were concerned about their safety during meetings.

A board spokesperson told 570 NewsRadio at the time that they made it mandatory for all guests to sign in, security personnel were brought in, and no live streaming was available for those wanting to watch meetings at home.

In April, the board reversed its decision on the online portion of the changes, bringing their discussions back to the digital platform.

Monday night was the first WCDSB meeting of the new school year.

“Our first livestreamed Board meeting went smoothly, with just under five community members tuning in. We’re pleased the technology worked well and grateful to those who joined us,” said Lema Salaymeh, senior manager of communications at WCDSB.

“As awareness of this new feature continues to grow, we expect more families and community members will take advantage of the opportunity to stay connected throughout the school year.”

Those interested in tuning in to the next board meeting can do so through the WCDSB website.

Monday night’s meeting has since been posted to the WCDSB YouTube channel.
