Waterloo council approves 3 new developments, including a hotel at UW

Waterloo City Council is continuing to bolster the municipality’s housing supply by approving three new housing developments on Monday.

The projects include a hotel at 380 Hagey Blvd. near the University of Waterloo, a 30-storey building at 177-179 Albert St. right by Wilfrid Laurier University and a pair of townhouses at 137 and 142 Woolwich St. in the Bridgeport North area of the city.

The decision from council comes after the municipality was awarded a $6.4 million cheque from the province for surpassing its housing targets in 2024.

Here’s a breakdown of each development:

380 Hagey Boulevard

The development at 380 Hagey Blvd. will create a hotel on the campus of the University of Waterloo in the David Johnston Research and Technology Park area. It is also down the road from the site of the new future hospital.

The design of the hotel includes 216 guest rooms, with a one-storey conference and banquet hall. It will also be a new restaurant, lounge and fitness amenities.

177-179 Albert Street

A 30-storey apartment building will be developed at 177-179 Albert St. The development is across the street from Wilfrid Laurier University at the corner of Seagram Drive. It will feature 231 units, with 425 bedrooms (91 studio and one-bedroom units, 86 two-bedroom units, and 54 three-bedroom units).

The city said that 4 per cent of the units are to be designated as affordable housing.

137 and 141 Woolwich Street

Two townhouses will be built in the area of 137 and 141 Woolwich St. The development is at the corner of Woolwich Street and Exmoor Street in the Bridgeport Road area of the city. In total, the buildings will be three storeys with 11 units with two and three bedroom options.
