No email accounts have been compromised, says the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), which is looking into a recent phishing scam sent out to students and staff.
School board officials say a “number” of WRDSB email accounts were sent fake job offers that linked to suspicious Google Forms.
The school board makes no mention of how many accounts received the emails but says no email accounts were compromised, and they are actively monitoring the situation.
The accounts that sent the suspicious offers have since been blocked, and the forms have been reported to Google.
The questionable emails themselves have also been deleted.
“Our team remains vigilant, and we are prepared to take additional action if needed,” read a release. “These emails did not come from WRDSB and were part of an external phishing scam intended to collect personal information.”
This isn’t the first time WRDSB members have been targeted by alleged cyber criminals.
Back in 2022, employee information dating back to 1970 was taken from a restricted WRDSB network drive.
The WRDSB said this is an important reminder to educate everyone on safe web practices and security.
It offers these tips for caregivers and students:
- Avoid clicking on links in emails that seem suspicious or too good to be true
- Delete any unexpected job offer emails
- If you or your child clicked a link or shared personal information, contact info@wrdsb.ca
- Remind your child to check with a trusted adult before responding to unexpected messages
