North Dumfries receives funds to help with Ayr Community Centre repairs

The Township of North Dumfries is set to receive a sizable grant that will help with arena renovations at the Ayr Community Centre.

The Ministry of Sport informed the township at the end of May that it would be getting the grant through the Stream 1 of the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund. A report to council states the grant is up to $1 million or “50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $1 million.”

The grant will move construction up a year to 2026; it was originally planned for 2027/28.

Council approved funds this week to begin the first phase of the project, which will look at designing the repairs. The cost of hiring the consultants is $175,000 and the first phase is expected to be completed by the end of the year or January 2026.

Construction would take place next year throughout the spring and summer. It would make improvements to the roof; the drainage system, to help with runoff; repairing and replacing exterior wall cladding and brick mortar; and repairing the parking lot.

The arena would be closed off to the public from April to September 2026 to allow for construction.

The total project is estimated to cost $3.5 million and is expected to be completed by the end of March 2027.
