Temporary leash free dog park coming to Waterloo Park

With summer now upon us, those with dogs will be looking to get their furry friends out and about to enjoy the nice weather.

Councillors in Waterloo Monday voted to install a temporary leash-free dog park to Waterloo Park by the Westmount Road entrance.

The park will only be there for two years and would cost $45,000 to set up. The costs would pay for temporary fencing, signs, containers and collection for dog waste and restoring the site after the park is closed.

This comes after council voted to close the Eby Farmstead back in November and asked staff to find a temporary location for a dog park, with the Westmount Road spot being the best of eight possible spots.

Other proposed locations for the park included Waterloo Park FDBD entrance area adjacent to Diamonds 1 and 2, the unprogrammed field in Waterloo Park West near the LRT station, the northeast parking lot at Waterloo City Hall adjacent to Spur Line Trail, a rooftop parking level of the Uptown Parkade, a vacant lot at Herbert Street and William Street East, a privately owned vacant lot on Erb Street East and another vacant lot on Sunshine Avenue.

The park would only take two to three weeks to set up, and could be ready by the end of the summer or early fall of this year.

Staff will also be conducting community engagement to find a permanent dog park location based on their criteria. Currently, any permanent dog park in the Uptown area is under budget and would ask for it to be considered in the 2027 capital budget process.
