Linamar in Guelph fined for 460-pound tool falling onto a worker

A major manufacturing company in Guelph has been fined $350,000 after a worker was critically injured on the job almost two years ago.

The Ministry of Labour says Linamar Corporation, on Speedvale Avenue West, pleaded guilty in Provincial Offences Court last month, and the ministry has now released a statement about the fine.

It said the worker was hurt on June 30, 2023.

The worker had been assigned to change out cutting tools, known as broach sticks, into a larger piece of machinery.

The statement described the sticks as “a long, toothed bar that progressively cuts into the material as it passes through or along it,” and one of them, weighing about 460 pounds, fell onto a worker.

The ministry said the stick was not properly clamped into a crane being used to lift it into place.

The statement said Linamar was fined for failing to meet its obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

In addition to the fine, Linamar was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of 25 per cent, for a total of $437,500.
