Laurier quarterback Elgersma drafted into CFL, invited to NFL minicamps

It’s another mark in the history books for one local university football star.

Wilfrid Laurier Quarterback Taylor Elgersma was drafted 18th overall by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the second round of CFL draft on Tuesday.

He made history by becoming the first quarterback in the school’s history to be drafted into the CFL. Teammates, wide receiver Ethan Jordan and linebacker Jayden Griffiths were also drafted, both by the Ottawa Redbacks.

Earlier this year, Elgersma made history by being the first USPORTS quarterback to attend the Reese’s Senior Bowl after winning the Hec Crighton award for the most outstanding player and a consecutive OUA MVP award.

During this season, he threw for 10,547 passing yards, 78 touchdowns, 605 rushing yards, and 18 rushing touchdowns, leading the Golden Hawks to an appearance in the Vanier Cup.

Elgersma has also received mini-camp invitations for the Buffalo Bills and the Green Bay Packers after not being drafted during the 2025 NFL Draft last week. Minicamp for the Packers runs from May 2-4, with the Bills holding theirs May 9-11.
