Repairs on the discharge gate at the Wellesley Dam are now complete, but the restoration work isn’t over, according to the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA), which says there are stability and public safety deficiencies that need to be assessed.
Two weeks ago, the discharge gate operation equipment at the Wellesley Dam was damaged by high water levels in the Wellesley Pond as the Grand River watershed was hit with extensive rainfall.
The GRCA called it a “dam emergency,” and repairs have been underway since then, which required the gate to be left open to protect the dam’s integrity.
On Tuesday, the GRCA said the repairs to the gate operation equipment are complete but an online statement said, “Additional stability and public safety deficiencies have been noted.”
The GRCA is conducting additional assessments which may require additional work on the dam structure.
An update is expected to be provided on April 18.
The Wellesley Pond remains drained and staff already relocated any fish or wildlife who were stranded because of the low water levels.
