RBJ Schlegel Park reopens amid recreation complex construction

The heavy construction equipment isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, but the soccer games and playground visits can now resume at RBJ Schlegel Park in Kitchener.

The City of Kitchener announced the park’s reopening and shared some key reminders for visitors.

This includes staying on the park side of the construction fencing, keeping all soccer balls and other sports gear away from construction zones, and parking at the lot on 1664 Huron Rd.

Construction is still well underway for the new Indoor Recreation Complex, set to be completed by next summer.

The latest update from the city said a significant amount of work has already been completed, including the concrete foundations and the steel for the aquatics center, lobby and multipurpose areas.

The exterior wall installation began in March.

The $144 million project is set to bring a new tournament-sized indoor turf field for both soccer and cricket, an aquatic center with an eight-lane competition pool and a walking track.

Plans also include space for a future gymnasium to support basketball, volleyball, badminton and pickleball.
