Special weather statement warns of up to 20 mm of rain Saturday

A special weather statement has been issued for rainfall as the ground in Waterloo Region struggles to absorb more precipitation.

A cold front is expected to sweep through Waterloo Region on Saturday, bringing showers and the risk of a thunderstorm.

Environment Canada says 10 to 20 mm of rain is possible beginning in the morning and through the afternoon.

Significant rainfall has already drenched the region this week and led to flooding. Low-lying areas could have pooling water; the agency warns that people should not drive through flooded roads.

Flood warnings remain in effect for West Montrose and Kitchener, while a flood watch covers New Hamburg and Ayr.

Temperatures are expected to hit a high of 17 C on Saturday before dramatically plummeting to 0 C overnight into Sunday. The forecast shows a chance of rain mixed with snow flurries.
