Net-zero carbon housing project wins region a sustainability award

The shovels have been in the ground at 420 Kingscourt Dr. in Waterloo since November 2022, but just this week, the project won the Region of Waterloo a prestigious award.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) awarded the Region of Waterloo with the Sustainable Communities Award for its efforts in building the first net-zero carbon community housing.

That housing project is right near Conestoga Mall in Waterloo and will be live-in ready by this summer. It will feature 73 affordable homes and save around $54,000 annually in energy efficiencies.

“Providing a comfortable and energy-efficient place to live for households who have lower incomes is one way to ensure that they are not left behind as we transition away from fossil fuels and move toward renewable energy” said Judy Maan Miedema, Principal Planner, Affordable Housing Development.

Those energy efficiencies include solar panels as well as a ZCB-Design certification by Canada Green Building Council.
