Weather warnings for freezing rain, heavy rainfall Wednesday

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Weather warnings have been issued for Waterloo Region as freezing rain and heavy rainfall are in the forecast for Wednesday.

Environment Canada says the precipitation will begin in the morning and will shift between freezing rain and regular rain.

The freezing rain is expected to stop either in the afternoon or early evening hours. Ice accretion of 2 to 4 mm is possible, leading to slippery and hazardous sidewalks and roads.

The rainfall will end either overnight or early Thursday morning and totals could range between 30 and 50 mm.

There’s also the risk of thunderstorms and easterly wind gusts of 50 to 60 km/h which might cause tree damage.

River flows increasing

Local waterways have risen in the last several weeks, as multiple systems and fast snowmelt have increased flooding possibilities.

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) issued a flood warning for West Montrose.

According to the GRCA, river flows in West Montrose are expected to reach the “Flood Warning Zone 1” threshold on Monday night.

Municipal flood coordinators in Woolwich Township have been tasked with notifying affected properties and will continue to monitor conditions.

The flood warning for West Montrose is expected to remain in place until 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 5.

The rest of the Grand River watershed remains under a watershed conditions statement for water safety due to the ongoing runoff, elevated flows, and hazards.
