New app lets GRT passengers pay fare through their phone

Want to take a ride on Grand River Transit? There’s an app for that now.

The new GRT Pay app lets passengers buy single-ride GRT tickets through their mobile device.

At this time, single-ride tickets are the only fare product available, according to the GRT website – but a user can buy one or multiple single-ride tickets.

This applies to all fares for any bus, ION light rail, or a MobilityPLUS vehicle, and Kiwanis Transit.

Passengers can simply show their ticket on their phone to the vehicle operator “for visual validation.”

Once activated, each ticket includes a two-hour transit window.

GRT Pay is also now a feature of the existing Transit app, and users can buy tickets within that app without downloading GRT Pay seperately.

The new app is available now from Google Play or the Apple App Store.

In a statement, Karen Redman, chair of the Region of Waterloo, said, “Adding new fare payment options makes the decision to take transit easier.”

She added, “GRT Pay will make taking GRT even more attractive and encourage new riders. And riders help reduce the impact on the environment with every ride.”
