Waterloo Region in the midst of a cold snap as it pushes through the first month of 2025.
On Jan. 8, the region experienced wind chills of -23 C, with highs peaking at -10 C. Jill Taylor, 570 Meteorologist, says it should be a bit of a warmer day on Thursday, with sunny skies and temperatures hitting highs of -6 C.
“Today is beautiful with the sunshine,” said Taylor. “We still have a strong northwest wind though, but if you’re in the sunshine and out of the wind, it’ll feel quite lovely. If you’re in that wind, yeah, not so lovely.”
She says the slight boost in temperature will continue into the weekend, giving a slight reprieve after days of frigid temperatures. Temperatures will average around -3 C throughout Jan. 11 and 12.
“We are gradually going to get back to seasonal temperatures before another cool down greets us next week, especially mid-week next week.”
At this time last year, the region was enjoying some mild weather. Temperatures hit highs of nearly 4 C at times, with averages sitting around the freezing mark to begin 2024.
Taylor says it could be a bit of an inconsistent few weeks for Waterloo Region. She says the cold temperatures will fluctuate in and out with intermittent snowfall in tandem.
“Kind of a little bit of up and down. If it’s not the bitter cold, we’ve got a little bit of snow then back to some milder temperatures. Then they’re colder again by midweek next week.”
