Threat that triggered lockdowns at Guelph schools originated from U.S.

Guelph police say a threat that was made this week that triggered lockdowns and a hold and secure at three schools, originated from the Midwest U.S.

It all happened Wednesday as police descended on the area around St. Michael Catholic Elementary School on McElderry Road as a bomb threat was received.

St. Michael’s and Jean Little Public School were both put in lockdown, while Rickson Ridge Public School was placed in hold and secure.

Guelph police say significant resources were deployed to the scene as a precaution, including tactical officers.

The threat was determined to be unfounded and the lockdowns and hold and secure were all lifted.

Police in Guelph have since coordinated with American law enforcement to further investigate the matter and say U.S. agencies have “taken actions to deal with the matter,” although no further details were released.

Guelph police are stressing the investigation further determined there was never any credible threat to public safety in the Royal City.
