Extreme cold, more snow moving into Waterloo Region

On Sunday evening, some areas of Waterloo Region got 14 centimetres of snow, others got just a dusting.

The next system coming to the area though, as early as Wednesday, is expected to hit everyone. This includes a wide-spread area of southern Ontario, potentially impacting GTA-bound commuters.

570 NewsRadio Meteorologist Jill Taylor said 5 to 15 cm of snow is set to arrive Wednesday, with bitter wind chills rolling in throughout the rest of the week.

By Friday morning, Waterloo Region could be dealing with wind chill values around -20 C.

This time around though, it won’t be the lake-effect snow that blanketed some areas of the region Sunday, but rather lake-enhancement snow.

“So lake effect, that cold air going over the open and relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes, and then with lake enhancement, the system is actually passing over the lakes and then it’s intensifying,” explained Taylor. “With that southwest wind, you’ve got some lake enhancement for some areas.”

Flurries are expected throughout the week, with the bulk of the accumulation expected Wednesday afternoon through to Thursday morning.
