Rangers battle back to get comeback victory over Owen Sound Attack

It was a wild third period, but the Kitchener Rangers got the win over the visiting Owen Sound Attack on Friday night.

Kitchener opened the scoring within two minutes of the game with a goal by Adrian Misaljevic. Owen Sound would quickly respond with a goal of its own before the midway point of the period when Rafik Varosyan got one past goaltender Jason Schaubel.

Both teams would trade goals back and forth for most of the game with Kitchener leading 3-2 after two periods. Owen Sound started off the third period strong and took the lead with three consecutive goals within four minutes of each other. But the Rangers would take advantage of the Attack’s sloppy penalties and scored three consecutive power play goals to make 6-5. Kitchener would hang on to secure its 17th win of the season.

570 colour commentator Paul Fixter said after the game that the fourth line, consisting of Andrew Vermeulen, Justin Bottineau and Cameron Arquette Arquette, was the best line of the night for the Rangers.

“They’re not playing like a fourth line, they don’t believe they’re a fourth line,” said Fixter. “If that is their fourth line, this team is pretty deep because they were very effective.”

Vermeulen received first star honours with a goal and two assists and Luke Ellinas was the second star with his two-goal game, including the game winner.

The Rangers will take on their Hwy 7 rivals the Guelph Storm on Sunday. Puck drop is at 2 p.m.
