Grand River and St. Mary’s General take another step closer to merger

The joining of the St. Mary’s General (SMGH) and Grand River Hospital is another step closer now that the Integration Business Case report has been submitted to the Ministry of Health.

It was back in April when the board of directors of St. Mary’s General first announced its plans to merge.

The report is a requirement whenever hospitals plan to merge in Ontario. If approved, the two boards would officially become one entity on April 1, 2025.

In a joint press release, the two boards said this is an important and historic milestone in the journey to bring the two hospitals together to form one new organization.

While awaiting ministry approval, the two boards will continue the work needed to fully integrate, while also moving forward with Building the Future of Care Together, the joint redevelopment project. That project is a new regional hospital to be built on the north campus of the University of Waterloo.

In the press release, the boards reiterated that both Grand River and SMGH will continue to operate as normal during construction, so there will be no impact on patient care.

The site for the new hospital was announced in July, but a price tag has not yet been determined. However, the new facility, which will serve Waterloo Region and Wellington County, will open in 2034.
