Kitchener announces three not-for-profit affordable housing builds

The City of Kitchener has announced the first three not-for-profit affordable housing projects to receive grant money as part of its Housing for All initiative.

KW Habilitation Services is building 18 units at 878 Frederick Street. Thresholds Homes and Supports is installing 30 units at its development at 667 Victoria Street South and Eleven Housing Corp. is building 22 units at 59 Franklin Street South.

Each of those projects have received $10,000 per non-for-profit affordable unit, through a program announced by Kitchener City Council in June 2024. The program is designed to help cover the costs of up to 500 new units across the city. The federal government is contributing to the program through its Housing Accelerator Fund.

The announcement took place at the KW Habilitation build.

“Tackling the housing crisis and making sure we have housing options for everyone in Kitchener requires community and government partners to come together in the spirit of collaboration and innovation. With the help of the federal government, we are getting more affordable and co-operative housing built here in Kitchener.”  said Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic in a press release.

In the same release, Waterloo MP Bardish Chagger said, “The Housing Accelerator Fund allows the federal and municipal governments to work together to eliminate barriers, and support local initiatives that will build even more homes, faster. Today’s announcement is an example of the Government of Canada working directly with the City of Kitchener to meet the affordable housing needs of residents who call this community home.”
