The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) continues to investigate the sudden death of a two-year-old boy in Cambridge.

A police spokesperson confirmed the boy and his mother were in the Beverly Street and Dundas Street area early Monday morning.

Police were called to the Soper Park area around 6 a.m. when the boy was reported missing.

Tragically, the toddler was found unresponsive in and around the area of the water in the park.

A release from WRPS said, “Life-saving measures were provided and the child transported to a local hospital. Unfortunately, the child was later pronounced deceased.”

Police are awaiting post-mortem examination results. The investigation is ongoing, although police say there is no concern for public safety.

A social media post from the City of Cambridge read, “We as a community are shocked and saddened by the tragic death of a child at Soper Park this morning. Our thoughts are with the family following this unthinkable tragedy.”
