Doors Open Waterloo Region returns for 2024

By Jake Varcoe

A popular event made its return to Waterloo Region on Saturday, and there was no need to knock for this one.

Doors Open Waterloo Region returned for an in-person event for the second straight year, and its expanded with 26 local destinations to explore.

The sites up for discovery included noteworthy buildings, interesting places and heritage sites. Last year, Doors Open Waterloo Region had a turnout of around 13,000 people, according to event coordinator, Kelly Spencer.

“We have a very engaged core set of people who really love this event and frequent it every year, and of course, we’re always trying to introduce it to new people,” said Spencer. “17 of the 26 sites have never participated in Doors Open before, so this is a new experience for them as well, and it really means there is virtually something for everyone.”

In 2023, the event had its doors open to 20 different local sites, but that number grew to 26 for this years event.

Previously, from 2020 until 2022, the event was an entirely virtual experience, but this year marked the second straight year of in-person discovery, and the 22nd year overall for the event.

The Doors Open Waterloo Region event will run from 10a.m. until 4p.m, and admission is free.
