Almost 600 residential break-ins in the region so far this year: WRPS

Another residential break-in has been reported in the region. The latest happened Wednesday in Waterloo and it’s just one of hundreds that have happened since the start of the year.

Waterloo Regional Police were called to the Hillside Crescent and Bertha Street area shortly after 6 p.m. on Sept. 11 after a home was broken into and various items were stolen.

No one was inside the house at the time of the break-in and police think the suspect, or suspects, arrived to the area in a vehicle and may have used walking paths to access the property.

Anyone living in the neighbourhood is asked to check any security footage to see if they captured suspicious activity between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sept. 11.

That includes people living in the Cabot Trail, Eastbridge Boulevard, and Bonavista Drive areas.

It’s already been a busy year for local police when it comes to responding to residential break-ins.

From Jan. 1 to Aug. 31, a total of 568 break-and-enters were reported at homes, which averages out to 71 each month.

While that number may seem high, it’s actually a decline from the past few years.

A spokesperson for the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) said on average, there were 868 residential break-ins reported in the same time period from 2019 to 2023.

Anyone with information on the Waterloo break-and-enter is asked to contact police at 519-570-9777 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
