Warmer weather, rainfall leads to flood watch for Grand River watershed

By Erin Anderson

There’s warmer weather and rainfall in the forecast for this week, which is leading to local flooding concerns.

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has issued a flood watch for the Grand River watershed.

According to the GRCA, 20 to 25 millimetres of rain is expected by mid-week, in addition to snowmelt from the mild temperatures.

The wet weather will generate runoff and likely cause ice cover on the river system to break up, elevating the risk of ice jam formation and flooding.

The GRCA has advised municipal flood coordinators to monitor flood-prone areas and be prepared to initiate flood response plans.

“Residents who typically experience flooding should be prepared as conditions can change quickly and without warning,” read the GRCA’s flood watch message. “Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with their local municipal flood response programs and be prepared for flooding due to the elevated risk with this event.”

The agency says there’s also increased safety risks because of high flows and unstable ice conditions around rivers and streams. The public is being urged to exercise extreme caution around all waterways as a result.
