Arrest made, elderly cyclist in life-threatening condition after hit and run

A portion of Victoria Road in Guelph was closed Thursday afternoon after a cyclist in her seventies was involved in a hit and run crash.

The woman was sent to a trauma centre in Hamilton with life-threatening injuries after the crash on Victoria Road between Cassino Avenue and Grange Street around 1 p.m.

That’s right by St John’s Catholic Elementary and St James Catholic High School.

Providing an update on Friday morning, a spokesperson with the Guelph Police Service said a 35-year-old Guelph driver was found a couple of hours later, and charged with failing to remain at a collision.

Police say in a release, “the driver of the sedan quickly left the scene without checking on the cyclist.”

The woman on the bike is now listed in critical condition.

The investigation is still ongoing – any witnesses, or those with dashcam or home security footage from the are between Cassino Avenue and Grange Road is asked to reach out to Guelph Police. Footage from between 12:45 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. is being sought.

This is the second crash in two days that saw a cyclist hit by a Guelph-area school.

Wednesday morning, a 15-year-old cyclist was hit by a vehicle in front of Paisley Road Public school.

Careless driving charges were laid in that case.
