The University of Guelph has officially announced that a new rainbow walkway has been installed, with a colourful painting of a Pride flag now on display.
The newly painted path goes from Winegard Walk to the McLaughlin Library on the university’s campus, making it the third form of rainbow path in Guelph.
“This Pride flag sends a strong message that U of G is committed to the path to equality for everyone on our campus,” Indira Naidoo-Harris, Associate Vice-President of Diversity and Human Rights with the University of Guelph, said. “The rainbow walkway is part of a broader strategy to continue making our campus more inclusive.”
The city already has two rainbow crosswalks, which can be found just outside Stone Road Mall as well as on the intersection of Norfolk Street and Waterloo Avenue. The university’s newest path is the first official full walkway in Guelph.
“It’s a colourful reminder that LGBTQ2IA+ individuals are celebrated at the Univeristy of Guelph,” said Naidoo-Harris. “The rainbow walkway says that we all have a part to play in creating a welcoming environment for everyone.”
The installation has been funded by the university’s Highest Priority Fund, which works to support various university-identified priorities. It can range from student assistance to innovative activities and more.
This comes as the university previously approved the addition of Gender Inclusive Housing ahead of the upcoming fall semester. This will work to minimize some of the barriers currently present when it comes to applying for and living in residence on campuses, while also working to provide education on gender identity throughout.
The walkway has already been installed, with the university having worked to get it finished before new students arrive for classes in September.
