By CityNews Kitchener Staff

We’re well into the summer months and there’s now another reminder to take precautions when its comes to those pesky mosquitoes.

The Region of Waterloo confirmed Monday that one pool of mosquitoes has tested positive for West Nile virus.

The pool was discovered in the City of Waterloo. It’s the first time the virus has been detected locally so far this year.

To date, that have been no human cases reported. The detection is a reminder that West Nile is present in our community.

“It is important for people to take precautions against mosquito bites when they are enjoying the outdoors, and to help control the mosquito population by removing standing water on their properties,” Associate Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Rabia Bana, said in a release.

Most people who are infected with West Nile virus do not experience any symptoms. Those who do develop symptoms within three to 15 days after infection.

Symptoms may include mild fever, headache, muscle aches, stiff neck, swollen glands and skin rash. In rare cases, severe symptoms can develop and medical attention is needed.
