Train track collapses following Tuesday’s heavy rainfall

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

After a heavy dropping of rain hit Waterloo Region on Tuesday causing flooding and pooling, the effects are still being felt a day later.

CN Rail confirms a portion of its track that goes over Schneider Creek near Balzer Road was left suspended in the air after the dirt base was washed away.

CN crews made repairs Wednesday in an effort to get operations up and running again.

In a statement provided to CityNews Kitchener CN Senior Manager of Media Relations Ashley Michnowski said “CN is monitoring a number of washouts within the region from recent rainfall events. Crews will begin repairs on the highest priority locations as soon as it is safe to do so.”

She added that CN will remain in contact with impacted customers until service is restored.

Drivers and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area for the time being as flowing water and further erosion of the soil remains a concern.
