Waterloo Region walks for Brain Injury Awareness Month

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Sunday marks the fourth annual walk, run and roll fundraiser for the Brain Injury Association of Waterloo-Wellington.

Statistics from Brain Injury Canada show twenty thousand people in Waterloo Region are affected by some kind of brain injury, and no two cases are the same.

Lynda Abshoff, executive director of the Brain Injury Association of Waterloo-Wellington spoke to CityNews Kitchener on the struggles of tackling such a wide reaching problem.

“We’re growing every year but, the demand for your services outstretches our resources. Brain injuries are an equal opportunity condition effecting all individuals of every demographic and brain injury survivors offer face substantial barriers to employment.”

Despite brain injuries affecting approximately twenty thousand people in the region only two hundred to four hundred people are reached by the program.

“People often don’t reach out. Some people are unaware of our services and some don’t need our services at this point. They may need higher medical services that we aren’t providing so we have a directory on our website that allows them to go and seek those medical supports.”

The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the associations office at 1-41 River Road East.

The event will offer a guided walk, scavenger hunt and more and is part of a month long fundraiser where individuals or teams of up to four can help raise funds for the organization.
