Carson Kressley coming to Waterloo for Queens on Princess

By Erin Anderson

A hair salon in Uptown Waterloo is getting ready to bring Pride back to Princess Street with an upcoming fundraising event, and TV personality Carson Kressley will be making an appearance.

Cowboys and Angels has been providing haircuts in an inclusive atmosphere for 25 years, with a rainbow flag flying outside the salon all year round.

In addition to celebrating the big anniversary this year, the business is also hosting the second annual Queens on Princess fundraiser.

Owner and operator Cindy Calhoun said almost 300 people showed up for last year’s cut-a-thon and $10,000 was raised for the local AIDS committee and Spectrum.

“Everybody was out…everybody. Because we have it on Father’s Day — there were dads with their kids, there were families,” Calhoun said. “At the end of it last year, the last song was We Are Family and everybody was dancing on the street.”

Calhoun said it was an incredible sight to see and this year, they’re hoping to do it again.

Queens on Princess will return Sunday, June 16 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature a stacked line-up of drag queens, including some from Canada’s Drag Race.

“We have Tynomi Banks, we have BOA — we have so many local great talented drag queens coming. We have tons of food, haircuts, and incredible prizes. It’s just going to be an incredible show.”

Seth Falk, a Drag Race pit crew member and owner of Hands on Exotics, will be hosting the event and putting on an animal show.

A big name in the 2SLGBTQ+ community and beyond will also be there, as style superstar Carson Kressley is scheduled to stop by.

Kressley is an Emmy-award winning TV personality from the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy series and more recently, he’s been a regular judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race and All-Stars. He’s also been featured on numerous other reality shows including Celebrity Big Brother, Dancing with the Stars, and Celebrity Apprentice.

All of the proceeds raised through this year’s event are going entirely to Spectrum, in support of trans youth. Calhoun said they chose the cause because of all the challenges transgender kids are facing.

“Trans kids right now really, really need our help and our support, ” said Calhoun. “Being a part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, I feel like these are our kids to take care of.”

Calhoun said you can contribute in a variety of different ways at the event; like donating, getting a haircut, and purchasing tickets for a chance to win prizes that have been donated.
