Second community drug alert issued this month

The Waterloo Region Integrated Drug Strategy (WRIDS) has issued a community drug alert for an increase in overdoses/drug poisonings in Waterloo Region.

The alert states from May 23 to May 26, there have been 35 reported cases in total and two suspected drug-related deaths.

The Kitchener Consumption and Treatment Services (CTS) Drug Checking Program has detected samples of Fentanyl, combined with various Fentanyl analogues, Benzodiazepines (including Bromazolam and Xanax), and Xylazine.

The concerning batches included colours from red, orange, dark pink, green, and grey.

WRIDS said in the alert that it is not clear that there is a connection between the substances identified and the reported drug overdoses/poisonings.

The alert goes on to say that if you are using to take precautions like never using alone, always carrying naloxone, and visiting the CTS on Duke Street in downtown Kitchener.

This is the second community drug alert this month.
