Second armed jewellery store robbery at Fairview Park Mall in two weeks

Once again, a jewellery store at Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener has been allegedly robbed by a group of armed suspects.

Waterloo Regional Police said in a social media post around 9:00, Monday night, that there had been a robbery at the mall.

An updated post half an hour later from police confirmed it was four male suspects, armed with hammers, who robbed the store.

Those suspects fled to a nearby dark sedan, where a fifth suspect was waiting as a getaway driver.

Police said one person sustained a minor physical injury.

Nine days earlier, almost the exact same scene played out at the same mall, late in the afternoon of the Saturday in the Victoria Day long weekend.

Police said in that robbery, four suspects with hammers and a gun robbed a jewellery store, smashing display cases and stealing merchandise, and spraying people with a noxious substance.

In that May 18 robbery, two employees were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the mall had to be evacuated as a safety precaution and closed for the rest of that day.

It’s unknown if the May 18 and the Monday night robbery were committed at the same store in the mall, or by the same suspects.

Jewellery stores in Fairview Park Mall have been robbed multiple times in previous months.

The mall has also been the site of other robberies this year — including one violent incident which saw several youths arrested.

Anyone who knows anything about what happened is urged to call police at 519-570-9777, extension 8255, or reach out anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.waterloocrimestoppers.com.
