Rangers sign free agent forward Matthew Hlacar

The Kitchener Rangers offseason continued Friday with the signing of free agent forward Matthew Hlacar.

The 17-year-old is coming off a standout season with the St. Catharines Falcons of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL) where he scored 16 goals and 38 points in 48 games.

“Matthew is another free agent we feel can be an impactful player in our league,” said General Manager Mike McKenzie. “He showed well at the camps he has attended with us and had a solid season in the GOJHL. He uses his size and strength well on the ice and plays a hard game. Welcome to Kitchener Matthew.”

The signing comes as the Rangers continue to strengthen their depth through the offseason. Hlacar adds size and strength to the forward lineup for the Rangers.

“It feels great to be signed with the Rangers, it’s a great opportunity,” said Hlacar. “I think it’s a great place to play with the fans and it should be fun.”

The Rangers have had success with free-agent signings in recent years. Adrian Misaljevic signed with the team as a free agent and was a key piece to the Rangers in the 2023-24 season. Former Rangers’ defenceman and current NHLer Arber Xhekaj and former Rangers’ winger Jonathan Yantsis saw success as OHL free agents as well.
