Rehkopf gets 50 with another OT Rangers win

There is only one name on Kitchener Rangers fans’ minds after this weekend: Carson Rehkopf.

Rehkopf becomes the 17th Ranger in franchise history to reach 50 goals in a season, and he did so with overtime flair. It was a 3-2 final against Kingston Sunday.

If this sounds familiar, Rehkopf was also responsible for the OT winner on Friday, against London as well.

CityNews 570 Colour Commentator Paul Fixter said this team is getting hot again, at the right time, with the playoffs just around the corner.

“Fifty is a huge number in any era, I’m really happy for him that he kind of gets that pressure off himself, now he can just go play, build off that fifty, we know he is going to get more goals this season. He’s got a shot that is destined to take him to the next show, and that is the NHL at some point in time. He is just a tremendous goal-scoring goal-scorer.”

Rehkopf said it’s a great milestone to reach.

“It’s awesome, it’s kind of a goal I set for myself, I think it’s been a good year for our whole team, a lot of people are having success, and we’re winning hockey games so that’s all that matters. So yeah, it’s pretty special to get it for sure.”

After the Rangers’ dominant weekend, the OHL Power Rankings had them climbing to second spot from fifth in the week 22 rankings.

Sunday was also Don Cameron Community Day at The Aud, a pivot from the old potato night tradition due to a declining demand for spuds the past few seasons.

The House of Friendship said more than $6,500 was raised.

There are only eight games left in the regular season.

Up next for the Blueshirts, the Owen Sound Attack in Owen Sound.

You can hear the game live on CityNews 570 on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
