Hockey game in Kitchener will fill the rink with pink, raising proceeds for cancer

A hockey game in Kitchener on Sunday will try to fill the Sportsworld Arena with a sea of pink, raising donations for people with cancer.

The Kitchener Junior Rangers teamed up with their rivals, the Huron Perth Lakers to host the “Pink the Rink” game. All the players will be dressed up in pink, showing support for some of the families of the players who are battling cancer currently.

They’ve asked anyone planning to attend the game to wear plenty of pink and donate.

“Seeing the stands full and just seeing a sea of pink its amazing,” said David Horne, the head coach for the Kitchener Junior Rangers team during an interview on The Mike Farwell Show on Wednesday.

“Coaching minor hockey, its not always about wins and the losses, its about teaching life lessons to young men and young women. This is just another opportunity for us to have the boys learn what community is all about.”

Horne said they made the event even bigger this year by adding more kid friendly activities and a silent auction. There will also be guest speakers from the Grand River Hospital Foundation.

“We have two surprises in store in terms of a mascot coming,” said Horne about a special surprise planned for the game.

Horne wouldn’t comment on what the mascot might be, wanting to keep it a surprise for the community.

“All the proceeds are going, from our auction and our ribbon sales, are going to the Grand River Hospital Foundation and we have also given the option for anybody to make a donation to the GoFundMe set up for the Cochrane family.”

The puck drops at 11 a.m. with a silent auction beginning an hour before.
