Waterloo Regional Police held a news conference Tuesday morning to share an update to a homicide that happened in Sept. 2023.

29-year-old Imre Czinczki from Kitchener has been arrested and charged with second degree murder in connection with the incident.

Police said it happened on Sept. 22 at around 2:35 a.m. in the area of King Street North and Bridgeport Road. Police responded to the area after receiving reports of a stabbing incident.

When police got to the scene, they located a man with injuries. 20-year-old Deron Camillus was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“He was enjoying a night out with friends in Uptown Waterloo,” said Jen Davis, Deputy Chief with Waterloo Regional Police. “Ultimately, the night would end in tragedy. A group of people had gathered on the sidewalk near King Street and Bridgeport Road when an altercation broke out between individuals in the crowd. During this altercation, Mr. Camillus was attempting to defend his friend when he was fatally stabbed,” said Davis.

Police said that Camillus was a business student from Scarborough in his second year of studies at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Davis added multiple witnesses were interviewed and several surveillance videos were viewed and analyzed to help with the investigation.

Police said both individuals were not known to each other.

Czinczki remains in custody and will appear in Kitchener court on Feb. 23.
