Shelter on Erbs Road needs to be relocated before April 2025 deadline

Regional councillors are meeting Tuesday to determine what will happen to the outdoor shelter at 1001 Erbs Rd. in Waterloo.

A motion will be presented to the community and health services committee meeting by Councillor Salonen to develop a plan for a second hybrid shelter in the region.

Regional staff are requesting $3 million be added to the 2024 budget to relocate and create a second hybrid shelter that will meet the needs of the current residents using the shelter.

The shelter at 1001 Erbs Rd. was given two years to operate using the wastewater management solution which was deemed as temporary in the building code.

In November, regional staff told council there was no plan in place for how to effectively let the shelter site draw to a close. They said it would have an adverse impact on the residents using the shelter services.

There are 50 individual physical shelters currently at 1001 Erbs Rd. which are moveable.

The motion on the table includes staff looking into potential new locations for the hybrid shelter and its residents.

If the motion passes on Tuesday, staff will have until May to come up with an overall plan.
