Smoke seen over flyover as crews battle nearby house fire

Emergency crews were called to a house fire in Kitchener early Friday morning, which had smoke seen drifting over the flyover.

The call came in shortly after midnight from the Weber Street East and Wilfred Avenue area.

That is just beside Highway 8, near the flyover in Kitchener.

Smoke could still be seen by motorists travelling on the expressway and highway, eight hours after the fire call came in.

Police confirmed to 570 NewsRadio that no one was in the Wilfred Avenue home at the time of the fire, and no one was hurt.

Damage to the home is significant, with the Ontario Fire Marshall called in to investigate. Kitchener Fire investigators are also on scene.

“Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke venting from the building, along with significant fire conditions on the main floor. Firefighters brought the fire under control and completed a search of the structure,” reads a release from the city.

“The building was undergoing renovations at the time of the incident and was unoccupied. The fire spread has caused extensive damage.”

City officials confirmed no one was displaced by the blaze.

It’s not clear what caused the fire at this point.

No damage figure had been released as of Friday morning.
