Messy winter weather hits Waterloo Region, travel advisory ends

A blast of wintry precipitation descended on Waterloo Region on Tuesday which led to hazardous travel conditions.

Environment Canada initially issued a special weather statement on Monday in advance of the incoming storm system, but that was later upgraded to a winter weather travel advisory.

The snow developed Tuesday morning and left roads blanketed, leading to heavy delays and some collisions. Waterloo Regional Police said there were 57 reported crashes between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. but none of them resulted in hospitalizations or serious injuries.

As of 11:59 p.m., there had been a total of 240 reported collisions.

The University of Waterloo Weather Station said it recorded more than 5 cm of snowfall as of noon Tuesday.

The weather then shifted in the afternoon and saw mixed precipitation including sleet and ice pellets, before the arrival of steady rain.

The winter weather travel advisory was lifted around 5 p.m.
