Guelph Police want to make students in Guelph aware of the dangers of a tuition scam that is ongoing.
Police report that in the last week, they have received at least three reports of students getting offered a discounted rate on their tuition from an anonymous person through email or a messaging app.
In a news release, police stated that at least one student was contacted by his school that the credit card used to pay for their tuition was reported stolen and therefore the payment did not go through. At this time, the student had already sent the scammer $6,000.
Guelph Police listed a number of ways which other students can avoid situations like this including never paying for tuition through a third party. They say that going directly through the school is the safest way.
They also ask that students never share their log-in information with anyone and if they suspect something isn’t right to always contact police and block the scammers.
