Doon Heritage Village utilities repairs expected to begin in January

Regional council has received an update on the long-awaited renovations being done at Doon Heritage Village in Kitchener.

A report accepted by council on Tuesday said the two year refresh project will have construction begin on major utilities. This includes fixing water mains, internet and telephone lines, road resurfacing and burying overhead wires.

The project was originally supposed to be done in two phases, but was having problems finding bidders for the construction tender. It will now be a single stage project.

Council had approved a recommendation in the 2023 budget to pause certain operations at the museum for 2023-2024.

Another report is planned to come to council on December 13 to outline costs and funding requirements, along with awarding the utilities tender.

Focus groups will also be looking for community input between January 2024 and next spring.

Construction is expected to begin in January and be completed by September 2024. The site is expected to reopen in 2025.
