Running in the upcoming provincial by-election for Kitchener-Centre is Liberal Kelly Steiss. She’s up against other major party candidates like NDP’s Debbie Chapman, Green Party Aislinn Clancy and Conservative Rob Elliot.
Kelly Steiss is mainly focused on improving public health, education and housing. She’s been a civil servant for over 21 years in Kitchener. She oversees programs at three community centers. Steiss has a background in government relations and project management.
She says the Liberal Party asked her to seek nomination and run as a candidate in the Kitchener-Centre by-election because of her experience.
During the pandemic, Steiss worked to keep community centers open for the public to use.
Steiss is mainly focused on improving education, healthcare and housing.
She was on the Mike Farwell Show this week to discuss her run for MPP for Kitchener-Centre. Steiss said more investment in healthcare and the local economy is needed.
“Forecasting into the future where were going to have maybe 900 thousand, maybe a million people living within Waterloo Region and we to make sure that our healthcare including our infrastructure keeps pace with that,” said Steiss.
“I think that’s where we really need to take some time and invest. Invest in healthcare so we can maintain a public supported and strong system that we’ve been proud of for so very long.”
Steiss and the Liberal Party have faced some criticism recently, as the Liberals have yet to elect a leader for Ontario. Ontario Liberal Party members will vote on a new leader this weekend.
Steiss said she thinks the Ford government picked an election day, knowing it be before they announce a new Liberal leader.
“Our leader will be declared on December second, and I think that’s an indication we make the current Ford government nervous. a new leader for the Liberal Party brings us more strength.”
Steiss’s full interview on the Mike Farwell Show on Friday, November 24 can be heard here.
Election day for Kitchener-Centre is November 30 and advance polling is now open.
